Here are straightforward answers to the questions patients ask us most often about appointments, coverage, eye health and eyewear.
How much does an eye exam cost?
A comprehensive eye exam for adults ages 20–64 is $100. Digital retinal imaging is $60, or a full eye exam with retinal imaging is $150 for private-pay or insured patients. Contact-lens fitting fees are separate.
Who qualifies for an OHIP-covered eye exam?
Ontario residents under age 20 and age 65 or older may qualify for OHIP-covered eye exams. People with diabetes and certain qualifying medical conditions may also be covered. Eligibility and frequency depend on current OHIP rules and your clinical circumstances.
Do you direct bill insurance?
Yes, we can submit eligible claims to most major insurers, including Sun Life, Green Shield, Canada Life, Blue Cross, Manulife, ClaimSecure, Desjardins, iA Financial and others. We cannot check your available benefits in advance, so please confirm coverage through your insurer or benefits app.
Do I need an eye exam if I can see well?
Clear vision does not always mean your eyes are healthy. A comprehensive examination can identify prescription changes and signs of eye disease that may not cause early symptoms. Your optometrist can recommend an appropriate exam schedule based on your age, health and risk factors.
Why do children need eye exams?
Children may not realize that their vision is blurry, and some vision problems can affect learning, comfort and eye development. Routine exams check visual clarity, focusing, eye alignment and eye health. Children under 20 are eligible for OHIP-covered exams.
What is myopia control?
Myopia control uses specialized spectacle or contact lenses to help slow the progression of nearsightedness in eligible children. RevitalEyes offers the newest MiYOSMART iQ lenses, Stellest and MiSight options with ongoing monitoring.
What is digital retinal imaging?
Retinal imaging captures a detailed picture of the back of the eye, including the optic nerve, macula and retinal blood vessels. It can create a useful baseline for comparison over time. The fee is $60, or $150 when combined with a full eye exam for private-pay or insured patients. It is not covered by OHIP, although some private plans may cover it.
Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism or need bifocals?
Often, yes. Modern contact lenses can correct astigmatism and presbyopia. Depending on your eyes and visual needs, options may include toric, multifocal or monovision fitting. A contact-lens assessment determines what is most suitable.
What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a common focusing condition caused by the shape of the cornea or internal lens. It can create blurred or distorted vision, eyestrain, headaches or glare. Glasses and contact lenses can usually correct it.
Can glaucoma be cured?
Glaucoma damage cannot currently be reversed, but treatment can often slow or prevent further vision loss. Because early glaucoma may have no obvious symptoms, regular eye examinations are important—especially for people with higher risk.
What is a lazy eye?
Amblyopia, often called lazy eye, occurs when one eye does not develop normal vision in childhood. Earlier detection generally gives more opportunity for effective treatment. We assess and monitor children and refer for additional treatment or vision therapy when appropriate.
Why is my eyelid twitching?
Common triggers include fatigue, stress, excess caffeine and eye strain. Most eyelid twitches are temporary, but persistent, severe or widespread spasms should be assessed to rule out another cause.
Do you adjust glasses purchased elsewhere?
Yes. We offer minor adjustments and repairs in the clinic, even if the frames were purchased somewhere else. Larger repairs may need to be sent to a local laboratory.
